A calm, step-by-step guide through each trimester, the decisions you’ll need to make, what to prepare, and how we navigated labour with clarity instead of overwhelm.

1. Understanding Each Trimester

Pregnancy shifts quickly, and each trimester brings its own rhythm.

First Trimester: Adjusting to the News

This stage is filled with excitement mixed with uncertainty. Symptoms can feel unpredictable, and it’s normal to question if you’re “doing enough.” Focus on:

  • booking your first appointment with the gynae

  • start considering which hospital you wish to give birth in

  • gentle nutrition

  • managing symptoms like fatigue or nausea

  • taking things slow while your body adjusts

 

Second Trimester: The Golden Middle

Energy usually returns, appetite stabilizes, and this is where parents often feel more prepared. Key things to explore:

  • detailed scans

  • deciding on a hospital

  • beginning baby item research

  • light exercise

 

Third Trimester: Preparing for Baby's Arrival

This is the home stretch. It’s the ideal time to:

  • pack the hospital bag

  • confirm birth plans

  • learn newborn basics (swaddling, bathing, burping)

  • arrange postpartum help if needed

 

2. Building Your Labour Plan (Without Overcomplicating It)

A birth plan doesn’t need to be a long document. Think of it as preferences, not rigid instructions.

Key decisions include:

  • pain relief options

  • immediate skin-to-skin

  • delayed cord clamping

  • who you want in the room

Keep it flexible — labour rarely goes exactly according to script.

 

3. What to Pack for the Hospital

Overpacking is common (we did that too!). Your essentials will normally include:

  • comfortable clothing for discharge

  • baby’s first outfit

  • swaddle and hat

  • car seat - this is a compulsory item for all ride-hailing except for ComfortDelgro taxis

  • toiletries

  • chargers

  • important documents e.g. finance forms, cord blood letter, etc.

  • simple snacks

  • nipple cream for breastfeeding - we highly recommend the medela one as it is safe to be consumed by baby and hence you do not have to wipe it off before breastfeeding

Hospitals usually provide more things than you expect — so this list keeps it simple.

 

4. The Labour Experience (A First-Time Parent’s View)

Labour can be emotional, tiring, overwhelming, and empowering all at once. What helped us most were:

  • steady breathing techniques

  • a supportive partner who is there to encourage and provide light touch massages

  • trusting your hospital team

  • small comforts like warm water and dim lights

The biggest takeaway: You’re stronger than you think — and your body knows what it's doing. Remember that birthing is a very natural human phenomenon!

 

5. Immediate Post-Birth Moments

This is where instincts take over. Expect:

  • baby placed on you for skin-to-skin

  • first attempts at latching

  • checks by nurses

  • learning how to carry, clean, and feed your newborn

  • lots of emotions — from exhaustion to joy and enjoy the post-labour adrenaline
